Hotel Tales Controller & Gamepad Support
Steam Deck Playable rating, default gamepad config, and when the mouse still wins.
Hotel Tales is a point-and-click hotel job sim. Steam still ships a controller configuration. Valve’s Steam Deck report (tested July 21, 2026, build 24151974) rates the game Playable: the default controller config is fully functional, graphics perform well, and SteamOS is Compatible. The same report flags non-Deck controller glyphs, small text, and manual on-screen keyboard for some text fields. This page translates that report into practical pad advice for living-room TVs and handhelds.
If you only want mouse and keyboard, stop after the next section. If you want a sofa setup, read the Deck caveats and the mini-game notes before you unplug the mouse.
Keyboard and mouse (the intended path)
Most boards — check-in cards, suitcase tags, cocktail pours, hidden-object Find the Items / Find the Key — were built for a cursor. Controls covers click, hold-to-pour, and rhythm hits. A pad can emulate the cursor through Steam Input, but precision drops on small debris clicks in the spa and on Kitchen icons after Patch 1.1.4.
Keep a mouse nearby for:
- First-day tutorials
- Pasithea’s densest disco stage
- Any hidden-object board you already failed twice
Gamepad and Steam Input
Steam lists controllertagwizard metadata, which means TopHouse supplied a default layout. Enable Steam Input for your device (Xbox, DualSense, or Deck controls) rather than a third-party wrapper.
Practical mapping that matches the mouse loop:
| Action | Typical pad binding |
|---|---|
| Move cursor / camera | Right stick |
| Confirm / click | A / Cross |
| Cancel / back | B / Circle |
| Hold pour / scrub | RT / R2 |
| Open menu | Start |
| Steam overlay | The usual Steam chord |
Glyphs on screen may still show keyboard or Xbox icons on a PlayStation pad. That is the Deck report’s ControllerGlyphsDoNotMatchDevice note, not a broken bind.
Steam Deck and SteamOS
Steam Deck & Handheld remains the handheld hub. Controller-specific extras:
- Playable, not Verified. Expect 16:10 UI clipping on some menus until you scale in SteamOS.
- Text input (save names, search fields if any) needs the manual on-screen keyboard. Steam Input will not always pop it for you.
- Proton 11 beta is the runtime Valve listed on the compatibility card. If a post-1.1.4 build regresses, try that runtime before a refund.
- Patch 1.1.4 explicitly improved Deck performance. Update before you blame the pad.
Linux desktop players on SteamOS-like stacks should treat this the same as Deck: default config works, mouse is still faster for hidden objects.
Mini-games on a pad
| Mini-game | Pad comfort |
|---|---|
| Check-in / keys | Good — large cards |
| Cocktails | Fair — hold analog or trigger in the green |
| Spa / Collect Seeds | Fair after 1.1.4 icon polish |
| Find the Items / Find the Key | Poor — small hotspots |
| Pasithea disco | Fair if you map click to a face button |
| Laveau defense | Good — trait panel + weapon icons |
Failed boards rarely hard-lock the story. Retry from the pre-board save instead of fighting the stick for ten minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does Hotel Tales support a controller?
Yes. Steam ships a default gamepad config and rates Steam Deck Playable with a fully functional default layout. Some on-screen icons still show keyboard or Xbox glyphs.
Is Hotel Tales better with mouse or pad?
Mouse is more precise for hidden-object and spa boards. A pad is fine for check-in, bar defense, and evening menus.
Does the Steam Deck on-screen keyboard open automatically?
Not always. Valve's report says some text entry needs a manual keyboard invoke. Open Steam's keyboard from the Quick Access menu.
Did Patch 1.1.4 help controllers?
It improved Steam Deck performance and mini-game UI. It did not add a new official button prompt set. Update anyway before diagnosing input lag.
