Hotel Tales Beginner Tips

Twelve habits that stop a first run from wasting the only honest Paulo week.

Beginner Tips

A first week in Hotel Tales is not hard mechanically. It is easy to waste. Players talk to everyone on the map, miss a date window, then try to “fix” Paulo with a hex editor. These tips assume you are on the current build (24786597 lineage) with Patch 1.1.4 extras on. Read them before you open a second slot.

If you only want a verdict, see Is It Worth It?. If you only want dates, see How to Romance.

The twelve habits

  1. Update before night one. Achievements and several UI splits landed in patches, not in the launch bits.
  2. Make a JSON backup after the tutorial evening. Save File Location — Cloud is not a time machine.
  3. Pick one lead. Dual-wielding flags is how finales collapse. Paulo stays exclusive.
  4. Treat extra map talks as optional. 1.1.4 added them. They eat the clock.
  5. Collect Key Phrases on purpose, not “if I walk past.” Key Phrases.
  6. Turn auto-advance off on dates. Best Settings.
  7. Stay on the timer. Defaults are polite, not romantic. Difficulty.
  8. Gift with a reason. Coins are not XP. Cards & Outfits. 1.0.7 already fixed the reset bug — do not “test” it.
  9. Do not install trainers. Mods & Cheats.
  10. Use the Gallery window after credits if a still is missing — do not restart the whole hotel. Gallery.
  11. Read side dialogues once. They flavor; they rarely replace a date. Side Dialogues.
  12. Plan a second slot before you need it. There is no true NG+.

First evening checklist

  • Confirm language and voice sliders (Patch 1.0.2 split).
  • Confirm controller glyphs if you play on a pad.
  • Walk the hotel once without accepting every optional talk.
  • Note who you actually like. The character hub exists so you can read a guest before you spend three nights.
  • Save in a named slot, not only autosave.

Common first-week mistakes

MistakeWhat actually happens
Talk to every map pingDate window closes
Gift everyone equallyNobody’s finale flags stick
Ignore phrasesClever replies never appear
Alt-tab on a confessionDefault line locks
One save filePaulo + Veorr both die
Buy DLC expecting storyPresentation changes, flags do not

DLC is listed in the DLC catalog. Buy it for outfits and motion, not for a secret eighth guest.

How long the first run should take

A focused first romance is about 8–12 hours. A “talk to everyone” first run can hit 15+ and still miss the finale you wanted. How Long to Beat has the ranges. Do not schedule a 100% weekend on slot one.

When to open this wiki mid-run

Do not open a spoiler ending page during night two. The hotel is better if you only know the systems.

Play one honest week. Then start the second slot like you meant it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What should I do first in Hotel Tales?

Update, split voice sliders, backup the first JSON, pick one lead, and skip optional map talks until that lead's date is booked.

Should beginners buy the DLC immediately?

Only if you want outfits or extra animation. DLC does not add story flags or a new guest.

Is it okay to talk to everyone on the map?

Not on night one. Patch 1.1.4 talks are optional and they consume time you need for a date window.

How many saves should a beginner keep?

At least three: pre-date, post-date, and a named slot per intended finale. Cloud is not version control.
